The city of Kamloops

This shot gives an understanding of the type of climate and topography that Kamloops is situated in.

The site will house more than just a marina. The plan is to also include a gas bar, boat launch, parking, and possible a yacht club.

I am looking to maximize the number of boat slips while still providing easy navigation routes throughout the marina.

Currently on the site:

• A public skate park.
• Yacht club. Small building that acts as a community centre
• Dirt parking lot
• Green space on the east end of the property.
• horseshoe pits (approx 8)
• An old dock, not used any more and in need of repair.

The site also has the Rivers Trail (public trail network that follows the rivers around Kamloops) running along the entire north side (water side) of the property. This will pose a unique problem. The trail will have to be maintained while still providing access for boat traffic to and from the marina. At this point I am thinking a pedestrian bridge over the water exit to the river.

This view gives a good idea of how wide the river is during low water.

Research Outline

The sustainabilty aspect of this topic will be in the forefront of my report. Defining sustainabilty must be determined first.

• In terms of sustainable development, to me, showing a level of design that is able to exist with little to no adverse affect on the environment, economy, or society.

This project will be built within city limits. Special problems are inevietable when dealing with not only the public, but fisheries, trades people, and time constraints. By addressing these issues early on, I hope to make the problem less strenuous. Items I will be looking into will be:

• Permits
• Fisheries
• Environmental
• Inclusion - How to fit everything on the site in an organised manner.
• Landscaping
• Security - Lighting, fencing, etc.
• Docking
